Just Like Clockwork Coronary Care Unit, Morriston Hospital, Swansea

The team at the Coronary Care Unit at Morriston Hospital, Swansea outline the challenges and opportunities of providing acute cardiac care in the South Wales region. Early diagnosis and referral to the Coronary Care Unit is the critical first step in successfully treating a Myocardial Infarction (Heart attack). This video initially reinforces the need for close team working between pre-hospital and hospital staff, and stresses the need for patients or their relatives to speedily call for medical assistance.

The development of coronary angioplasty at the cath lab at Morriston hospital and the excellent pre-hospital care by GPs and the ambulance service mean that world class treatment is now possible for the vast majority of patients in this area who are unfortunate enough to suffer a heart attack.

The production then examines the need for patients to appreciate the “whole pathway” approach to cardiac rehabilitation including participation in the cardiac outpatients programme and making lifestyle changes. Due to the incredible speed of modern cardiac angiographic procedure the recent tendency for patients to under appreciate the severity of the cardiac episode that they may have suffered is also explored.
